Slowly Layla stepped over the bumpy foothill, her feet carefully leading her down the slope towards a nearby path covered in mud. Without even seeing the tiny hole before her, Layla slipped down the rest of the hill, mud and leaves gathering onto her clothing as she tried to hold onto anything that might stop her from falling. But it was no use - in a matter of seconds she was sitting in the middle of a muddy trail, her head hanging low as she sighed in frustration. She could've made this journey easier had just chosen to travel in her Urhan form. Wolves were so much more capable of navigating through this sort of terrain than a human such as herself. Ah, but that was just it - she wasn't completely human. Then why didn't she just use her gift? Use her abilities as a child of Luna to make this trip much more simple? Ah, but she couldn't do that - it would be too easy. Plus, she had never really truly been comfortable as...well, a werewolf.

It was so strange - a werewolf feeling so uncomfortable in their own skin after so many years of coping with the change and the reality of what she was. But still she held onto that human side of her - the clumsy, naive, and foolish side that couldn't even find her way towards the city without stumbling along the way. Yet this was the life she chose - the life she wished to embrace above all else. She had to keep some part of her human side in tact, didn't she? Not just for her own sake but for the sake of others...She couldn't imagine what life would be like had she embraced her animalistic side completely. And she wasn't about to go testing the waters now...especially when she was lost and alone.

"Fuck-" she cursed under her breath, when she finally realized how dirty she had truly gotten, the mud sticking to every part of her legs and bottom, "Next time...I'm taking a goddamn bus," she muttered to herself, as she slowly rose from the ground, the mud now trailing down her back and legs.
Nature could be a bitch sometimes.
And this just happened to be one of those times...

He loved the life he had been gifted with. That was it, simply; a gift. He loved the feeling of superiority over humans, the taste of a fresh kill. It had taken only seconds for him to come to terms with this new lifestyle, he had lived in a werewolf community; it had just been the normal way of life.

Silently he stalked through the undergrowth in Urhan form. His feet made soft, pad falls against the undergrowth, like clockwork. He didn’t notice her at first, not until her soft yelp and the awkward skid she made into a pool of mud. Bemused, he watched, covered by undergrowth although he was sure she could smell him. He could sense she was not human.

With apprehension he slunk back into human form, shoulders rippling, naked, and standing before her. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind. “Need some help?” He asked, unaware of his nudity, emerald eyes taking in the situation with a cold smile.

She didn't need to hear or see him. She indeed had smelled him the moment he stepped forth from the rough undergrowth. Layla could sense almost immediately that he was far from being human. Silently, she sat there, feeling his aura upon her as he crept closer, his eyes still remaining on her. Oh, she could feel him in every way possible - the beating of his heart, the warmth of his breath, and the adrenaline flooding his veins...Ah yes, he was one too. A child of the night, a son of Luna - one who was both human and animal, all in the same body, in the same soul.

She had expected him to come forth in his Urhan form, the form she had smelled upon him. The smell of musk, dirt, and foliage practically suffocating as he made his way near her. But as she turned to face him, she was astonished to see him standing there - naked, his sculpted figure standing before her, a cocky grin playing at his face. Even males of her own kind weren't any better than normal human males. So cocky and full of themselves, not caring who saw them in all their nakedness and glory. A man was a man - be he wolf or not, they were all the same.

"No. I'm fine," she grumbled, as she tried her best to keep her balance, the slippery ground making it hard for her to do so, "You can run along now. I'm sure there are other girls running about in the forest, waiting to get a glimpse of your nakedness," she smirked, mirroring his own grin.
But she wouldn't be laughing for long.

As she fumbled to get to her feet, she slipped once more, the cold damp mud now covering her completely - hands, back, legs, arms, chest - nothing had been spared except for her face. Damn it! What was with this place?
"Shit, shit, shit!" She snarled, looking down hopelessly at her dirty clothes, "Someone just shoot me...," she sighed in defeat, just sitting there in her pathetic position.

Was it possible for someone to be this awkward? A string of curses followed in her wake as she realized the extremity of her situation. Not knowing exactly what to do Valentine slunk through the undergrowth, a hand raised as if to ease her. “Are you sure?” He winced, allowing a moment to take in her muddied experience.

She was beautiful, he was sure; robust and strong features coupled with the body of some Amazonian woman. It was incredible what being inhuman could do to the human side of you. Although-now he couldn’t tell for the thick layering of mud that nearly covered every inch of her body; besides her face.

He reached down to where she lay, pulling her to her feet with slight groan. “Wouldn’t it be much easier to just travel in Urhan…?” Valentine asked as he quietly shuffled his feet through the thick undergrowth. Why would she be out here in Human form anyways, what good had that done?

He stepped back, unsure of what to do; confused by her lack of common sense in this wet forest outcrop. He had come to hunt, and on the breeze; he currently smelled nothing. It would be easier in Urhan but that made communication a little difficult.

She watched as he slinked towards her, his emerald eyes following her every move as she tried to pull herself from the muddy hole. For a moment he actually seemed concerned for her well being. She hadn't expected that at all. Then again she really didn't know to expect from others of her kind since in reality she had never been around any. Living among humans had made her docile and somewhat calmer than most (or at least she assumed) thus she couldn't even begin to imagine how her kind functioned. Only from stories that the Apache had told her and from the tales she had read as a child and seen on television did she know anything of her own kind. It was pathetic to say the least but entirely true.

And she knew just by the look on his face as he approached her, his emerald eyes so calm and somewhat kind, that he too saw her as a pathetic little creature. A sad little pup with no one else to turn to. A creature who was not even close to reaching her full potential as a werewolf - yes, that was certainly pathetic to say the least. But she couldn't deny it - she was pretty sad, just sitting there in a muddy trail, so helpless and lost.

"Okay, maybe I'm not so sure...,"she sighed pitfully, as she looked up at him, his hands now coming to help her up, "I know what you're thinking...And trust me, I know it's easier to travel in Urhan form," she grumbled, as she braced herself against him, her tiny hands grasping onto his shoulders.
Ah! He was still...well, naked.
Not only was she fumbling about like a clumsy idiot but he was just standing there, completely naked and his gaze still fixated on her.
It was as if he was studying her - her facial features, her eyes, her hair...

"Do I intrigue you or something?" She inquired, her voice somewhat harsh as she finally found some balance against a tree, "You can leave at anytime y'know. I don't need a babysitter," she scoffed, as she wiped the mud away from her tattered jeans.
Did she really need to be all hostile at a moment like this?
Maybe if she put her pride aside for just a second she might be able to find a way out of this place.
He might prove to be useful...maybe.

"So...do you come here often?" She questioned softly, trying her best to sound a bit more humble, "And no that wasn't a pick-up line," she smirked, in an attempt to lighten the mood.
Even around her own kind she was still socially inept.
Lovely.

She was so human. He almost was unsure how to act around, carefully he stepped away, leaning on a tree stare obtusely into a crisp, gray sky. “I was hunting.” It was less a statement than a question, spilling from his lips with a hint of disdain as he rested his gaze upon a wayward sky. It was so odd to even say it, not the fact that he had been hunting; just…around her, it felt as if he was speaking to a human.

Skin rippled across lean shoulders as he reached for a branch, twisting it with a hint of strength before throwing it to the ground. God, this girl made him feel weird shit. He laughed at her babysitter comment, a deep rumbling sound that rose in his chest like some hostile wind. “It looks like you do,” He turned to blink at her, tear shaped sapphire crystals scoffing right back. “If I’m not mistaken.”

Maybe it’s the nakedness. The thought barely crossed his mind as he stepped away from the large oak and paced nervously around the forest. She just hadn’t been around her kind, it seemed. Ever.

He remembered the day he had met Rhea in the woods, luckily having a pair of jeans to spare her infant eyes, now he was out of luck. Happening to have wandered across this hillock rising up from the sparse forest had not helped. He could now feel the contrast between Rhea’s untamed wild mane of yellow hair and this woman’s ashamedness at being found muddied in such a situation. He could imagine the smile on Rhea’s crisp face as she wiped mud from her arms before running back through the woods, her only navigation a strong nose.

Suddenly, he almost didn’t feel the desire to offer help; sure this creature was in need; but she barely acted like a werewolf. She seemed unwillingly to revert to her own primal; basic instinct. He stared up at her, green eyes flickering with a sort of sad unwillingness. He could of course-show her the fun of being a wolf.

She watched as suddenly his demeanor seemed to change. His desire help quickly fading as he allowed her to stand on her own, her knees still shaking as she gripped onto the tree bark before her. He too came to lean against the same tree, his broad and perfect figure just stretching before her as the moon's rays shone upon them. Even though his nakedness had caught her off guard at first she seemed to be slowly easing up as she focused on him, her bright violet eyes taking in every detail of his face and figure.

He was a rugged man - no; wolf, creature, animal - to say the least, his shaggy hair hung over his emerald eyes as he looked up at the clear midnight sky, silently admiring the stars above them. She could tell almost immediately that he was comfortable in his own skin - comfortable with his primal instincts, the beast within him. He had to be considering he was standing there naked without a care in the world! Plus, he had approached her in Urhan form - a form that she had never seen anyone in except herself.

"Oh," she mouthed, her violet eyes widening with curiousity,"Do you mind me asking...what's it like? To hunt?" She questioned softly, as she carefully pulled her hair to the side, her slender fingers weaving through her soft tresses
Okay, so maybe the mud wasn't too bad. After all, she had grown up around nature all her life - why had the mud bothered her so much? Perhaps it wasn't the mud...perhaps it was the fact that she lacked what this wolf in man's clothing seemed to have an abundance of - instinct. Since the time of her change, Layla had tried to keep control of her wild side, the wolf part of her that begged to be set free. Although she still strongly considered herself a daughter of the night she still couldn't deny her human side. The side she had embraced for her whole life...the only side of her that she didn't fear completely.

"Gee, thanks," she huffed, as she carefully sunk down to the base of the tree, her body now sitting firmly against the tree, "At times, I can't help to feel as if I need one too...," she sighed, looking down at her dirty shirt.

"Well, there's no point to having this on, huh?" She said with a smirk, as she lifted her shirt over her head, revealing a snug tank top underneath, mud stains still covering that as well, "So, tell me wolfman...Do you always help damsels in distress like myself or did I just get lucky?"
It was a legit question, wasn't it? Besides, she highly doubted he ran around the woods looking for women - even if he was a wolf.

[woops didn’t realize her eyes were violet jess xD]

“I guess not,” He muttered watching her throw her muddied, discolored shirt to the ground with a quick flick of her hand. “No I don’t.” Oh yes, of course he was ran through the woods looking for women that lacked essential common sense just for a few seconds of glory. No, he wanted terribly at the moment to sink his teeth into some animal’s raw flesh, spill some blood.

“It’s scary,” He continued, gesturing awkwardly with two large, paw-like hands. Her own slender fingers wove through her hair with a quick beautiful speed. “Sometime, you feel like… like you might just lose yourself in a moment.” He didn’t regret to mention the bloodlust that took over, the crunch of bone and the awkward yet delicious taste of marrow that followed. The most terrifying part was watching life seep from an animal’s eyes as they grew sallow.

Maybe he was too much of an animal. He was too wild and feral. Maybe some time ago, Valentine had lost his own humanity in forest during one of his half-starved kills. He sank across from her, back being scratched by the thick, entwined bark as he rested against a tall oak. Only his neck was now visible above the long grass stalks.

“Do you want to hunt?” He asked, not thinking. He followed the question with a stretch and then a long yawn. He opened his eyes to take in her surprised violet ones. She shouldn’t have been so curious, now she would have to answer or there was a very good chance he would leave her here, running so quickly in the opposite direction she wouldn’t be able to keep up with his scent. Maybe hunting together would do them both some good.

She smirked a bit as he said that he didn't go around saving damsels in distress such as herself. The sad part of it all was that she really didn't need to be in distress in the first place - in a way, she had brought this upon herself. Foolish little pup she was - so unwilling to embrace the beast within her that practically begged to be set lose. Maybe she deserved to be lost, deserved to be left alone in the middle of the forest.

"Then I guess I'm just lucky you found me," she smiled slightly, brushing a few strands of hair away from her delicate face, "You probably think I'm the worst wolf you've ever met, huh?"
Of course he did!
What kind of wolf didn't know how to hunt? Didn't know how to follow their instincts, their own nose that was right in front of them?
She could hardly even begin to wonder what he thought of her, her slender frame simply sitting beside a tree, no energy or beast within her whatsoever.
Pathetic, to say the least.

Just as she was about to get up, he spoke once more, his voice sounding more like a growl than a human. At this, she smiled, admiring how in tune he seemed with his own wolf side - perhaps he had lost what little humanity he had left back when he had changed. Back when he found out what he truly was...unlike her, who at times hid her true nature, her true self. He obviously didn't see anything wrong with being what he was - neither beast nor man.

"Hunt? Really?" She spoke softly, her violet eyes growing bright at the idea, "I'd...I'd love to," she agreed, a small smile tugging at her lips.
She knew by experience that she was horrible at it. Back on the reservation, she hunted alone, being led only by her sense of smell and the light of the moon.
However, her attempts were meaningless. She still lacked the skill, the training that those of her kind had. Their instincts had flourished while her's laid dormant.
Perhaps tonight was the night she'd be waiting for...

“I think you need to hunt.” It was a gruff response but he had grown exhausted with talking. He hadn’t come to save anyone after all, merely to kill a few animals.

It wasn’t that he thought she was the worst werewolf, it was that…she needed to be shown around. She seemed rather naïve yes, and it was honestly pitiful but he was pretty sure he could teach her to hunt easily. He rubbed his eyes, stifling another yawn as he turned to face her direction.
He had forgotten to mention he’d never taught anyone to hunt before.

“Where are you from?” he mused, gently standing, his lean body stretched as he waited for an answer. It had been awhile since he’d talked to another wolf, he’d also regretted to mention that fact. He smelled them around, the trails of wolves but hadn’t really taken the chance to getting to know them so he was in a similar position as the woman.

“I’m Valentine.” He muttered, “Not like the holiday…like Vall-in-teen.”

She nodded, agreeing completely that she did indeed need to hunt. It had felt like days since the last time she had actually eaten. Of course, her means of eating had been more human than animalistic - no hunting was involved in the last meal she had eaten and perhaps that was part of the problem. She never truly tried to hunt like a real wolf - never tried to use her senses, her natural instincts, or anything that her so-called gift had granted her. He might not have been as willing to show her the basics of hunting but it was nice to see that he was at least willing to offer.
Besides, what's the worst that could happen?

"Okay," she finally blurted out, as she too slowly rose from the moist ground, stretching a bit as if getting ready to run, "I'm from New Mexico. I was born in Sante Fe but later in life I moved onto one of the reservations out there that belonged to the Apache nation," she calmly explained, as her lavender eyes met his emerald ones.

Even behind those mesmerizing orbs of emerald, she could still see the ravenous creature lurking within, just waiting to be let loose upon the land. Never in her life had she seen a being like herself up close - it was all so new to her, so different and yet so thrilling and exciting all at the same time. She knew that he was probably a good hunter, perhaps even the best of his pack - the look in his eyes said it all. Somehow she would have to live up to his expectations, to his hunting ability. Somehow she would have to survive this - one way or another.

"Vall-in-teen," she annunciated his name, trying her best not to mess up, "Got it. I'm Layla by the way," she added, with a quick grin, "So, Valentine...where exactly are you from?" She asked, as she came to stand beside him, his nakedness no longer bothering her as she gazed up at him.
Was she truly ready for this?
For what it was worth...probably not.

He smiled wryly, staring down into her retreating violet spheres, clearly worried; nervous. He could understand, some compassionate being erupted inside him, he could easily understand. It must be terrifying or- at least thrilling. He remembered his first hunt, the first change. He was fifteen and it was just expected, it was a normal part of life. That’s what it had always been to him, normal. It was the supreme contrast between them, she didn’t accept it, didn’t understand or comprehend how regular it was to him.

“It’s not really…important.” His words were more of a growl than anything but it was really just exhausting. His past life what he had left behind some ten years ago was just some apathetic dream. It had felt, nice to get away from it all and he wasn’t really in the disposition of bringing it back up.

They stood in silence for a moment, Valentine thoughtful; staring obtusely at the earth. He watched with careful eyes as ants wove across the ground like some spectral force knitting a blanket of black across the forest floor. He felt rather disheveled, uncertain how to approach this, as talking would be impossible; he was taking a moment to best decide how they should go about this. He was unsure if she was skilled in body language, it was be a terrible idea to take down some great deer and her not knowing when to back off. He wasn’t in the mood for blood on his hands.

And he was hungry.

“Ready?” He murmured, stepping forward and turning to stare back at her. Green eyes flickered for one moment, shoulders rippling and a leap into the brush. In his place a stout russet wolf approached, tentatively sniffing the air, aware that there were several large stags nearby.

She didn't need to look up at him to feel those jade eyes burning into her, a small grin tugging at his lips. She couldn't help but smile as well, the obvious nervounsess shrouding her delicate face as she felt the cool breeze blowing passed them. It was a quiet and chilly night - the perfect time for a good hunt. Or at least, she assumed it was. From the look on Valentine's face, it didn't seem as if it really mattered what time of day it was - he'd hunt no matter what. For a wolf, hunger was a hard burden to satisfy - especially when it came to quenching one's thirst for the thrill of the hunt. Then again, she never really truly felt the power of the hunt, never knew what it was like to feel the power of what she truly was enhance her every sense. Perhaps tonight would be the night - tonight she would hunt as a wolf.

She frowned as he shrugged her question off, the disdain showing on his face as he sniffed the fresh air. Obviously he wasn't much of a talker - not one for questions or answers. Instead, he began to study the earth beneath them, his eyes narrowing as he watched an army of ants crawling away in perfect formation. For a moment, Layla could see how in tune he was with everything around him - from the ants on the ground to the moon up above them. It reminded her of...well, home. Of how connected her people were to every living thing around them and how they could see the meaning within everything.
Why couldn't she do that? Why was so lost when it came to truly being who she was?

"Okay," she responded quietly, not wanting to push him into revealing anything he didn't want to.
Maybe his past was too painful to dwell upon. She could relate - she understood what it was like to run from one's past in hopes of finding something...more.

With a soft mumur, he asked her if she was ready, his body stepping forward as he changed right before her very eyes. His chiseled figure now crouching forward as his once glistening alabaster skin began to change into a more russet color, fur now covering him from head to toe. She watched closely as he sniffed the cool night air, his emerald eyes still glowing against the black canvas that engulfed them.

Inhaling deeply, Layla stepped forward, stetching out for a moment before slowly beginning her own tranformation. Her long dark tresses that blended so well with the darkness now turning white, as she hunched forward, her slender figure now on all fours. Letting out a soft whimper, she lept forward, her white fur now covering the length of her body as she came up beside him, her violet eyes still shimmering against the abyss.

Out of nowhere, she felt something kick in - her need to sniff the air growing more immense, as she finally followed his lead, sensing the aroma around them. She smelled something distinct - something...enticing. Meat. Food. And it was very close-by.
Quickly, she turned to look at him, her lavender eyes studying his body language closely to follow his next move. Wherever he went, she would follow. He was the leader now and she was more than willing to obey.

The forest had become suddenly alive to him. It was always a surprise the change from being so cut off from nature to having such a sharpened awareness of the most microscopic life now utterly surrounding him. He could sense the small woods creatures that teemed apathetic of his wandering, silent footsteps. Even the air was brisk with an odd majestic crackle, nearly sparkling with the woodsy and aromatic scents that lingered like some heavy mist upon the air. It was as if he had been walking in a dream and suddenly his senses had been plunged into icy depths.

He turned back to Layla, echoing his excitement. His eyes brimmed flashing emerald under a slowly setting moon. He felt no exhaustion, only the increased agitation that came with hunting, bloodlust beginning to rise in his throat threatening to overcome his human senses. He could smell the deer through the thick clumps of brush and forest debris mingled with the frosty night air and clear sharp spring water.

Finally he could stand it no longer, with a glance back at Layla he shot forwards, hackles rising in a quick sprint. The forest blurred to an imperceptible green black as he rushed towards the river following his nose and hoping she would stand to keep up. It felt so good to run, almost as if he hadn’t in forever. His breaths came in short pants, intakes of the frosty air that left his lungs feeling raw; singed by the night. Briars clung to his pelt, sticking sharply and forcing salty blood to rise to the surface only driving on his mad rage.

Then, several bounds from the river he stopped; collapsing under a netting of briars and panting heavily. They stood yards away, seemingly unaware of him. Ears flickering to keep off nighttime pests and heads bent to lavishly soak up the clear spring water. He waited for Layla, trying with his best skill to analyze attack points. That was the difficult thing, keeping a straight head; their musty, crisp scent had risen to the surface so violently nestled in the air like some overwhelming mist. They would not smell him, as the river rose to a sharp incline upwards in the hills. Coupled with the spring water it made him imperceptible.

Where was she? He wasn’t sure. He wasn’t waiting. He could barely stand the scent now. Quietly, he paced forward, paws brushing silently against thick netting of debris. His hackles were raised, teeth bared and head lowered so close to the ground his lower snout brushed against the moist earth. Saliva dripped from his jaws, curling in strings of silver.

She studied him closely, her violet eyes fixated on him and ignoring her throbbing senses for just a few moments. It was hard to ignore her senses, to ignore all the sounds and smells around her just to focus in on him. Her mind was aloof with the growing sensation of anticipation that was building up inside of her, her heartbeat racing faster with each move that he made. She was waiting on his signal - a signal of any kind. She wasn't really sure how he would signal to her what he wanted of her but she felt that somehow her instincts would not fail her in the end.

Her ears perked up as she listened a hooting owl in the distance, her hearing tuning slowly tuning in to something a little farther than the nighttime critter above them. Quickly, she looked to him, knowing almost immediately that he had sensed it to - the smell of them, the sound of them huddling nearby...Fresh meat for the two of them. Most likely deers, she thought to herself as she watched him sniffing the air with such interest and in such an attentive manner. Whatever they were, she knew Valentine was not about to let this opportunity pass them by - or at least him by.

With just once glance back at her, emerald eyes glimmering fiercly against the pale moonlight, Valentine bounded forward in search of their meal. For a few seconds, Layla simply stood there, a soft whimper escaping her quivering snout as she tried to figure out what her next move would be. Of course, she had to follow him, no? She didn't know the first thing about hunting with another thus she had to follow him if she didn't want to spend the rest of her time alone in the middle of the woods with no food to eat. With a gutteral snarl, Layla pounced forward and began to run in the direction he had darted towards. In a matter of seconds she was able to pick up his scent, one almost like her own but stronger and more musky.

Dodging the obstacles in her path, Layla kept close to the trail he left behind, leaping over fallen trees and pushing passed thick brush to get to where she needed to be. She couldn't lose him - if anything, she depended on him. She hated the thought of being alone again, fumbling about in a forest she barely knew. She hated the thought of possibly going hungry because of her own stubborn nature and inability to tune into her wolf side. At this point, she needed him if she was to survive - if she was to make it at least for the time being.

So she kept on, her paws pushing her forward in great bounds as she glided through the forest, her nose hot on his scent. Suddenly, she stopped, however, when her nose could no longer detect his aroma through the cool night air. Whimpering softly, she glanced about, trying to pick up the smell once more but to no avail. Shit! She had lost him in just a matter of moments!

Wait - no, there he was, lying underneath a nearby shrub, his russet fur now covered in leaves and dirt. Slowly and quietly, she came up behind him, keeping her distance just to make sure she didn't startle him. There was no telling what he was capable of once the bloolust and hunger had kicked in. For the most part, Layla was in complete control of her thirst for flesh yet somehow she didn't feel that Valentine was in the same state of mind as she was. After all, he was much more in tune with his wolf side than she was and for what it was worth, he enjoyed it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

As she carefully crept up behind him, she couldn't help but get a whiff of something in the air - his scent, her scent...and them. The deer were close by and from what she could tell, Valentine had found them. Looking away from him for a moment, Layla focused her gaze across the river, the same direction in which Valentine was facing. As she suspected, there they were - a group of healthy deer just ripe for the picking. She could practically taste them, her tiny nose still sniffing away at the air as her tongue passed over her sharp canines.

When had she become so animalistic? She really didn't know what was coming over her at that moment but she knew it was just part of who she was. She couldn't deny the thirst for much longer, her hunger growing greater by the second as she watched them, her mouth now salivating with delight at the prospect of having such a delicious meal.

Her fixation was suddenly interrupted when she heard the sound of twigs crackling nearby - it was Valentine and he was on the move once more. She knew if she hadn't caught up so quickly he would've attacked without her. But now that she was here, two wolves seemed to be much better than one. Finally, she came forward alongside him, her slender body mimicking his in the same lowered stance, her snout now resting against the earth and her legs ready to pounce forward. Silently she watched their movements before glancing over at Valentine once more with a feral grin.
Oh, she was ready now.
Ready as she would ever be.

Suddenly Layla was beside him, her scent suddenly so comforting in the airy forest; keeping some human part of his brain intact. He could practically feel her excitement, hackles rising and eyes flashing violently in the direction of their prey. He could practically taste it now, the fresh scent of spilled blood coupled with the soft crunching of bones. It was so worth it. It was the next best thing to a fight. A feral image passed through his mind, of light draining from their eyes as they drained to a sallow black.

Chills passed down his spine and the air was tinged with excitement. His breathing was so long, minutes seemed an eternity as with suddenness he would take a step forward, turning to flash another glance in Layla’s direction. He wasn’t sure how to tell her how to hunt. It was a learned skill; hunting and he had forgotten to mention that. It was pure instinct. Sure, the killing part required a bit of sense but the rest was just letting you sink into that predatory state. He hoped she could completely release her mind, ignore cognitive thought and that sickly little human side that wanted so badly to have control.

Once more did he turn, staring so deeply into her dark spheres he hoped to get his point across to her. Eyes flickered sending one last, shuddering glance up at the huge round moon. He turned away, this time serious. Teeth bared, tail flicking wildly as he scoured the ravine one last time, stepping forward.

Nearly silent he crossed the few yards but they had seen him, eyes grew wide, ears flickered and with a sudden stampede of sound coursing from the emptiness they were off. Hooves were pounding wildly into the earth, snorts cutting through the sound of rushing water as they gasped for air. He didn’t wait, bounding rapidly Valentine cut along their heels, trying best to avoid being trampled to death and hoping to cut one off.

There were several, up to five at least. A large buck lead, two does following it along with a fawn and one smaller buck trailing behind. God they smelled amazing. Musky scent hung in the air sending his head spinning. He licked the air, cackling wildly with large barks as he avoided sticks, trying desperately to make an offensive maneuver.

The buck straggled, slower than the rest he barely managed to keep up and was rapidly falling behind. Seeing an opportunity he leapt. Landing on its flank Valentine sunk teeth deep into the hip. Bone, he could taste bone. Unfortunately the stag had come to be fully aware with his presence also; barely managing to stay standing it whipped its head in a nearly futile attempt sending Valentine to the ground with a brush of sharpened antlers.

It was gone.

He could see it as he lay wincing in pain, running awkwardly in the distance, blood still brushing his now matted fur. Valentine laid helpless, watching and hoping. Sure he would heal, but god it was going to leave scars. Long ragged incisions left him panting.

Shit. Shit. Shit. All He could think was how much of an idiot he had to be. How ridiculous he was trying to tear its flank apart when he should have simply torn open the fucker’s stomach. With a groan Valentine managed to stand, limping lightly he tried to run but found himself settling into a comfortable crawl. Hopefully she could take care of herself because healing was going to take a while.

Finally he began to recover. Taking off in a quick sprint he rushed through the forest, matted fur brushing into briars sending winces of pain along his stressed body. He winced, groaning and emitting barking noises at the tough needles that seemed to stick out like thorns as they lodged themselves thickly in his feet. God he hoped she was okay. Some desperate part of him wanted to run quicker, wanted to become just a blur to escape into the wind. He had to make sure she was alright

It happened so suddenly. The instant Valentine looked back at her she knew that this was it. For a few moments, he silently gazed at her, their eyes practically meshing together as one as she tried to read his thoughts. Never in her life had she felt such a strange force pulling her towards someone. Perhaps it was just her animal instinct kicking and telling her that she needed to pay attention to him. Or maybe it was something else - some sort of odd connection that not even nature itself could explain. Whatever the truth behind it was, Layla knew what he was trying to tell her. His once huddled body now quickly raising from the moist earth, as his tail flailed wildly and his snout was now fulling taking in the scent of the midnight air - oh, he was certainly ready. In a matter of seconds, Valentine rose completely and darted towards the ravine, his body moving with such grace and power that she could practically sense the fear felt by the deer across river.

As soon as his paws hit the glistening water, their eyes flickered upwards, the terror shadowing their once calm expressions. In an instant, they were off, their bodies a huddled mass of blur as they sprinted into the dark, desolate forest. But Valentine did not hold back - oh no, he was not letting them escape that easily. As quickly as he had left her, Layla too ran forth, her lean legs pushing her forward, through the ravine and passed the thorny bushes that stood between her and the other side of the forest. They were on the hunt now - now was her time to prove herself.

Following the russet shadow before her, Layla glided through the forest, the ease that she was experiencing as unimaginable, almost inconceiveable. It was so invigorating, so beautiful, so...completely unlike anything she had ever experienced in her life! How had she managed to live all these years without knowing this feeling? Without feeling the embrace of the wind against her white fur or the scent of fresh meat ready for the picking? Never in her human life had she experienced such a feeling of complete rapture and ectasy. And now that she was fully experiencing it, she couldn't imagine going back. Going back to the way things were when she ignored her wolf-side, the part of her that begged to be set free...no, no that was out of the question now. Now she was free. Finally free.

Panting wildly, Layla's tongue flicked against her sharp canines as she tasted the air around her. Oh, she could taste them so clearly now - their fear only beckoning her further. She couldn't even imagine what Valentine was feeling at that moment. For one who was so used to embracing his animalistic side this must've been the most pleasurable thing on the planet! Now she finally understood why he had been so fervent in his effort to push her to hunt and how he seemed to be so lost when she explained her uncertainty about all of it - about hunting, about eating raw meat, and about just being a wolf in general. What werewolf wouldn't love this feeling?

Her head was spinning now as she tried to stay focus on the path ahead of her, avoiding obstacles in her way as her eyes searched for any sign of Valentine. He had disappeared into thin air! His russet shadow was nowhere to be found as she finally came to stop beside a thick grove of pine trees, her slender snout sniffing away at the air in order to get a whiff of his scent, their scent - any scent at all. But it wasn't a scent that caught her attention but rather a sound. A whimper, soft but undeniable to her astute hearing. It was Valentine. He was hurt. She could practically sense it by the whimper - full of pain and agony.

Quickly she sprung into action, following the trail of whimpers till she finally spotted him, his limping body attempting to sprint towards her, searching for her. She swiftly made her way towards him, thrusting passed the thick undergrowth that seperated them, soft whimpers escaping her own mouth as she felt the thistles sticking against her pure ivory fur. Carefully she brought herself closer to him, her muzzle gently poking up at his in a submissive manner, her tongue gently licking away at his nose in an attempt to somehow comfort him. Even with the pain that was subduing him, Valentine still struggled to move forward, struggled to continue on to find the prey. But even as a werewolf, Layla knew healing although it was quick it wasn't quick enough to get him back onto his feet to continue the pursuit.
She would have to do this alone.

With a soft howl, she nuzzled her head against his for a brief moment before sprinting off in the direction of the herd, their scent still lingering in the air as she pointed her snout upward, her sense of smell now leading the way. Passed a few rolling hills, she was hot on their trail, her paws plummeting her forward as she slid down a narrow bank, the imprints of hooves left in the herd's wake. There were five of them - a strong buck, two does, a fawn, and a younger buck. Although thehoofprints did help it wasn't the trail of imprints they left behind that kept her on their path. It was the scent of blood, so strong and infuriatingly close that she could taste it in the air. One of them had been injured, it's blood covering a thin trail that led down the embankment. As she continued further, the hoofprints of many became that of one. The herd had left one of their own behind thus leaving Layla the perfect chance to finish what Valentine had started.

Stopping dead in her tracks, she saw something out of the corner of her eye - a slender shadow, hovering behind a tree. It was the young buck, shaking with fear and pain as it backed away further, into a nearby bush. Layla could sense it growing weaker, it's once rapidly throbbing heart now just a pitter-patt away from silence. But like any animal, Layla knew this deer wasn't about to let go just yet. It still had some fight in it and she could see just by the startled look in it's eyes that it was ready. Death or no death, this deer was prepared to do some serious damage.
But that wasn't about to deter Layla from the task at hand.
The hunt was still on and she wasn't about to give up.

Slowly she walked forward, her tiny paws rustling against the leaves beneath her as her violet eyes were now fixated on the shriveling animal before her. As she carefully drew closer, she noticed the blood slithering down it's side, a mark of clearly canine teeth still imbedded in it's flesh. The image of the blood and the mark that had already been made only furthered her appetite - God, she was close...so close indeed. The drool slipping passed her sharp canines as she allowed the thought to develop more so in her mind. Baring her teeth at the frightened young buck Layla could no longer control her hunger, her claws now digging deep into the earth as she tried to surpress it.
But she couldn't.

With one quick lunge, Layla pounced forward leaping onto the young buck and bringing it down with one quick blow. She sunk her teeth into it's slender neck, a gutteral growl escaping her snarling lips as the young buck flailed about on the ground. Rapidly, she shook the young buck's neck about before finally hearing the sound of it's neck snapping underneath her clenching jaws, her once pure white fur now covered in blood as she kept a tight hold on the deer's neck.
It fidgeted for a few seconds more, it's once lively body finally embracing the sweet silence of death.
It was over now.
She had done it.

The aching pain felt as if it would never ease. Throbs pulsed through his body like silent reminders of his own stupidity. All he could do was skulk silently through the undergrowth quietly trying to avoid thick thorns that wove silently around him like a spider web of even more palpitating, streamlined pain. Under the ache remained a more remarkable tinged ease. Very slowly, almost too slowly he could feel the pain edging away a dreaming feeling beginning to envelope usually icy senses. If he could have outrun the pain, outrun the even more satiating repose that seemed to drive cognitive thoughts from his head, there was a good chance Valentine would have been miles away.

He limped what seemed like ages, feeling a restless inclination began to seep into his bones. All the way, cursing himself silently, wordlessly. He echoed sharp whimpers into the breezy forest air, as if in reply to some silent, berating force lurking aimlessly in the forest. He felt like shit. Then, a small snout pressed so lightly into his nose he nearly jumped away at the unexpected exaltation of companionship. Soft caressing noises followed as a small pink tongue emerged long enough to swipe his face sympathetically.

She let out a soft howl, turning once more to glance at him with those beautiful violent eyes, so sharp and burning that Valentine felt something stir so deeply inside of him. Then-she was gone, before he could return the greeting, the goodbye. Another throb of pain pulsed so violently through him as he was left to limp after her. This time is was different, fear. Fear for her, fear that she wouldn’t be able to finish what he began or would grow lost in the large forest. A sort of burning desire to catch up with her filled him, he desperately tried to limp faster, quietly edging along the forest like some despised sloth.

Finally he caught up. It felt like ages later. Time seemed to have passed endlessly as he stalked through the forest slowly recovering, his breath coming in rapid pants with each slow step forward. To say the least he felt better, emerging in a clearing to find Layla hunched over the deadened body of his adversary, the large deer.

He wheezed a happy bark emerging from his throat as he sprinted painfully over to where she had landed. Blood matted white fur as she stood, that same burning passion replenished in her eyes, quiet satisfaction so glowing throughout all he could do too suffice his happiness was to quietly lap at her soft muzzle. She had done it. Some fraternal bond now seemed to effortlessly strengthen around them as they stood in the clearing each staring quietly into the other’s eyes.

Then he remembered his hunger. Over the pain now it lunged like a tidal wave of a burning. Burning so tight he felt as if his throat would close, suffocation would cause him to end in a last futile attempt at satiating the lifelessness that seemed to flow through him. He couldn’t do it, he was losing the simple battle of humanity, blood rising turning his senses inflamed as he stared angrily at the body, lips curling into a last human expression.

Teeth met solid bone, crunch. Crunch. He sunk his jaws into the warm flesh, salivating at the test of soft meat mixed with such a salty tinge of the beast’s blood. He ripped the stomach open, carefully, jaws slitting through its fatty deposits with silent precision, spilling a mass of carnage into the forest floor. The animal inside of him had control, a mass of thick groans as he lapped blood from the forest floor, dirt filling his mouth with a dry mineral taste.

He shook, spasms filling his body as thick claws sunk deep into blood moistened earth and attempt to control the jitters that ran through his body. Nearly choked groans filled the silence around them as he feasted, uncaring of Layla so suddenly, so suddenly not even human. God it tasted amazing. Fresh blood filling him with a sort of livid rage as in a single whip of his head upward as howl was emitted so high into the air he was sure for a moment the entire forest had returned with one single cry.

Layla. A single thought, he turned to look at her, his mind slowly regaining the ability to perceive. He turned to stare at her, eyes flickering so full of life, of sudden happiness even over the throbbing pain in his leg. He was so proud. He was so happy for her that something besides that human control had taken over her body that she had allowed herself to sink into something more than what she pretended to be. He felt as if he had helped her accomplish something she might not on her own, something that might aid her later.

She had done it and this had changed his feeling entirely for her.

The pulsating impulse to kill and to feast had practically taken over her every thought at that moment, as her fangs sunk deeper into the fleshy skin of the young buck. Her mind ran rampade as she feverishly licked away at the blood that seeped forth, the young buck's final attempts at moving and jerking away only pushing her hunger even further. It was as if his sad attempt at surviving was egging her on, influencing her to not think of the pain it was going through and to not even think of the last time she had done something like this.

In reality, she had never done anything like this. On her lone hunts, she usually hunted rabbits, birds, and small mice - nothing as big as a deer had ever crossed her mind as being a meal. She recalled how she felt when she killed those tiny animals, the neverending guilt that hurdled towards her every time she sunk her teeth into a tiny, innocent rabbit or owl. God, how she hated it. It made her sick to think of it - to think of how she had taken away the life of another, with no mercy or remorse. Yet here she was, doing the unthinkable to a deer and actually feeling good about it. Hell, she felt better than good - she felt amazing! As morbid as it sounded, she actually felt that she could get used to this. Get used to the bloodthirst, the chase, and the victory. Mmm, yes. Fresh meat after such a thrilling chase certainly tasted better than most things she had tasted in her life.
She had finally found the wolf within her.

As she gnawed away at the deer's neck, she heard the sound of someone drawing near. Valentine. She had almost forgotten about him. Quickly, her head snapped up, her jaws still clenching onto the neck of the young buck as she looked up at him, her violet eyes suddenly noticing the difficulty he was having walking. She hadn't imagined the injury he had received was that deep or serious. Suddenly, her animalistic side grew dormant as her human side finally came forth once more, her jaws slowly loosening it's grip of the feast before her and drawing away from the lifeless body. With some hesitation, she moved towards him, her eyes watching him closely as she tried to make out what his next move would be. She didn't want to hurt him or agitate him - even in his weakened state, she knew that wolves were still fairly dangerous.

Out of nowhere, his snout came to meet hers as his tongue gently licking softly at her muzzle. She let out a low howl as she nuzzled her snout against his, the feeling of his approval, his satisfication with what she had done making her feel ultimately satisfied. She could sense just by his mannerisms that he was pleased with her. The way his piercing emerald orbs stared back at her, a deeply rooted emotion stirring within the very depths of her soul as she tried her best to remain calm. She didn't know what to make of the look he was giving her - so penetrating and yet so calm and soothing. Never in her human form had she felt such a burst of emotion, of uncertainty that seemed to grow within her with every waking second that he continued to stare.

Then he looked away. As quickly as he had looked at her, he looked away, his mind now set on other things - on feasting and finally satisfying his hunger. Shaking her head, Layla turned back to the the lifeless body, the young buck now lying there, awaiting it's final judgement. Without another thought, she began to tear away at the neck once more, the blood now dripping down her muzzle as she let out a soft growl every now and again to show her delight with the meal. Mmm, it was more than she had expected it to be. Never had she been so satisfied with just one meal. Perhaps it was the satisfaction gained from the hunt itself and just knowing the Valentine approved. But why did she care for his approval so much? She hardly knew him and for what it was worth, she still had a human side to her...
Didn't she?

After what seemed like an endless time of feeding, Layla finally looked up, her mind tearing itself away for a moment to catch her breath. She was nearly full yet the thirst that was building within her urged her to continue. But she couldn't. It was just too much for one to handle. She needed to stop. Even with her animalistic need driving her, she knew she couldn't continue. The tiny human side of her finally pulling her away, as she slowly moved away from the buck's body and towards the sound of water trickling nearby - a creek perhaps, the perfect place to clean away the blood that stained her perfect white coat.

She knew that Valentine was still feasting and she decided not to disturb him. Thus silently, she crept towards the nearby creek, her tongue slowly lapping away at the blood that hung from her bottom jaw. Never had she had so much blood on her - so much innocent blood, for that matter. As she thought about it more the thought made her somewhat sick, a nauseating feeling sweeping over her as she carefully made her way down the slightly narrow hill leading to the creek. She needed to be in human form. Something about the thought of blood and what she had done was now driving her to feel some sort of guilt and remorse for the creature she had killed.
God, how she hated it all.
She wanted so desperately to be the wolf she was meant to be but still that part of her, the human part, still remained and kept her from reaching any sort of real potential. How could she ever truly live this way?

Letting out a high-pitched howl of frustration, Layla slowly transformed back into human form, her white fur slowly melting away as she pushed herself up off the ground, no longer on her hands and knees but upright, as a human should be. She completely disregarded the fact that she was naked, not caring since the only one nearby was Valentine and from the looks of it he would be busy for quite sometime. Sighing softly to herself, she finally slipped into the crystal-clear water, the cool water mixed with the brisk breeze sending chills up her spine as she allowed herself to be engulfed by it. Perhaps by cleansing her body she'd be cleansing her soul, her guilt and maybe even some of the thoughts that had pervaded her mind after she had killed the young buck.
But who was she kidding, there was no penance for killing another.
She was a wolf now - a wolf and a killer.

Ok, great. Just fucking great. She had told the driver to take her to New Helena, and so the driver did as she said. He took her to New Helena and just dropped her on this endless street. The good thing was that she was in New Helena. The bad thing was that she didn't know where. And her feet were hurting from those damned heels and she was tired of walking already. No, she wasn't lazy. It was just that all the luggage she had to take with her was too much for someone as fragile as her. And now there was this forest. Which seemed good to her at first. A forest lead to people most of the time. Even though she didn't dare to take one step into it. The way the trees looked, and the quietness just scared her, gave her a strange feel.

After a while she decided to rest and stop, try to call someone. Slowly she sat down on one of her boxes and took off her heels, resting her feet on the soft grass. At least it wasn't raining.

He had a good run then cooled down in the creek a mile back before heading towards the road once more. In human form but barefoot with only his jeans tugged on and not yet buttoned as he looked around for her shirt. Didn’t he wear one this trip? It was still about forty degrees outside and even though his body had no care for how cold it was at this temperature Caden tried to keep up the human pretenses by wearing a shirt in case someone saw him. And sure enough right sniffing around for his own scent a few faces he saw it, apparently some animal got a hold of it because the long sleeve tee was ripped from collar down to the chest on one side. Oh well.

He carried the ruined shirt in his hands until he reached the edge where he stopped to sniff the air and frowned, turning to his left he saw the girl sitting there all alone with luggage. “What the fuck.” Mumbling that to himself as he strolled over, somehow remembering he should put his shirt on along the way. He just got it tugged over his long torso as he got within speaking distance of the woman. “Where’s your car?” Where, he always got right to the point after all.

Someone was there. At first she didn't dare to look behind her to see who it was. It was in the middle of nowhere after all. But she trusted it, this could be help. So she turned her head to look up at a huge man. He was just wow. So big and build. Hell, he could carry her to the place where she was staying. "Uhh... it's probably far far away from here now. Since my driver left me out here. Can I ask you what way I should head to find the town?" she just wanted to go to a warm place right now. What the hell was he doing there anyway and why was his shirt all ripped up?

"And where's your car then?" she mused with a charming smile, standing up on her bare feet and turning her whole body towards him gracefully. She had never imagined that it would turn into such a disaster as this. Her first day in New Helena already ruined by this fucking ass of a driver. Maybe the man could help her get to town again? It was all she needed and wanted right now. She brought up a hand to flip her long brown hair over her shoulder and look around. She wasn't dressed for this kind of event either. Damn.

Yeah, he could probably carry her to where she needed to go for miles and miles before he ever got winded … but that wasn’t exactly a human trait so not something he would broadcast. Just strolling along still half wet from his dip in that creek and blue shirt clinging to him but since it was a dark color he wasn’t looking like a man about to join a wet t-shirt contest thankfully. But before he could make it closer to this woman she was going on about her driver letting her out some place and now she was apparently walking which was just really odd. What the hell kind of taxi service had she gotten herself into?

“My car is where I left it.” Well then. He came to stand just in front of her, arms crossed over his chest and frowning down at her before looking around with a deepening frown at the falling sun and the fact they were miles away from anything. “Well … get up. I’ll take you to the bar and you can call someone to pick you up.” Reaching down to just pick her up by a firm grip to her shoulders until she was steady on her feet, he was ever so polite after all. Then just grabbing the suitcase she had been sitting on and the smaller on next to it and heading off down the road without even waiting for her.

It wouldn't be human, no. But gosh it would save her some miles of walking on either bare feet or heels. She was never truely comfortable walking on bare feet, had never been. But it was better than walking on heels when your feet were aching like hell. And damn he looks so... wild. Half torn shirt covering his chest and his hair still wet. She really liked the sight. And then his eyes... so piercing that she could not take her eyes of them. About the driver... he took 'to new helena' a little too literally and just threw her out at the side of the streets over the border. She had never met such an ass as that driver. Stupid fucker. She frowned at the thought.

"Is there a bar all the way out here?" she asked, a little sign of shock in her voice. "Well, thank you then." she smiled, joy taking over her body. Finally she could go somewhere warm or even sleep for a while. That premiere last night was a little too much. But what really shocked her was how he just picked up those really heavy suitcases. They were stuffed with everything she had. How could he just carry those? "But seriously, what are you doing all the way up here? It's not like a tourist attraction is it?" It took her a while to realize that he was already heading off without her, and so she skipped after him on her bare feet. Now really wondering who this guy was. And if he knew her or anything. Most of the people did... and so it was nice if someone didn't.
